Fines add up

A NEW State Government website has revealed the speed camera hot spots in Hobsons Bay and the millions of dollars being fined each year.
The website allows residents access to previously undisclosed data on the state’s speed and red light camera network and has been named Cameras Save Lives by the government.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Peter Ryan said the website was a valuable road safety resource for motorists, and delivered on the Coalition Government’s promise to provide greater transparency around speed and red-light cameras.
The website reveals more than 10,500 fines were issued during the 2009/2010 financial year on the West Gate Freeway in Altona North, on the Geelong-bound lanes and more than 9000 issued on the Melbourne-bound lanes.
The intersection at Blackshaws and Millers roads in Altona North was also a hotspot for fines during the 2009/2010 financial year.
Almost 300 fines were issued slapping drivers with $82,740 in fines.
On the Western Ring Rd in Laverton North more than 14,807 fines were issued on Boundary Rd slapping drivers with a whopping $2.5 million in fines.
Mr Ryan said speed and red light cameras played a crucial role in making roads safer by encouraging motorists to slow down.
In Victoria between October and December 2010/2011 more than 117,000 fines were issued to motorists driving less than 10km/h over the speed limit.
A spokesperson for Aussie Speeding Fines said speed cameras and fines are ridiculous and out of control.
“The road toll in Victoria is on a record high,” the spokesperson said.
“Yet Victoria is the most heavily fined state in the country.
“If they really do cause people to slow down then how come more and more fines are being issued every year?”
