PETER Gibbons may not be a citizen of Hobsons Bay but after almost 13 years as Laverton Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge he certainly feels like one.
Last week the former Senior Sergeant received a Certificate of Appreciation from Hobsons Bay City Council in recognition of his many years of service to the community.
Peter retired from Victoria Police in January this year after 43 years and 11 months in the job.
The veteran told Star he was honoured to receive the award but to him he was just doing his job.
“As far as I’m concerned I was just doing what I should have been doing,” he said.
“I’m not into milestones, it’s gone quickly and I’ve really enjoyed the journey.”
The father of four and grandfather of three said when he retired he hadn’t lost interest in the job.
“It’s a huge part of your life,” he said.
“I’m enjoying retirement but you miss the people and working relationships.”
The 61-year-old added he enjoyed his time at the Laverton station and worked hard to establish community partnerships.
“The most important part was making sure all the police there were part of the community,” he said.
In 2009 Peter received the Australian Police Medal for his distinguished service on the police force but he remains humble about the honour.
“I don’t look for kudos,” he said.
“It’s a great honour – but it’s a no fuss thing.
“But I’m extremely proud.”
