HOBSONS Bay Councillors have lashed out at a State Government decision to increase landfill levies without consultation.
The government has been accused of catching local councils off guard by introducing legislation into parliament that will increase the landfill levies charge by an additional 10 per cent.
Councillors last week moved to write to the State Government to express their concern about the lack of consultation which will see the levy increase to $44 per tonne.
Cr Luba Grigorovitch said she was not happy that the council was not consulted about the additional cost. Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan said he didn’t think anyone would argue against measures to promote recycling, but the Baillieu Government gave local councils absolutely no warning of this decision. “Local councils have been so caught off guard by this announcement that the first some knew of the increase tax take was when I contacted them,” Mr Noonan said.
