THEIR season may have come to an end last weekend but it was all smiles for the Western Jets at the TAC Cup Team of the Year and Morrish Medal announcement.
An outstanding year on the park led to off-field accolades for the Jets who had a number of winners on the night.
It was no surprise to anyone that Jets’ superstar Will Hoskin-Elliott was named in the TAC Cup team of the year in the centre line.
He was joined by Adam Kennedy who was named on the bench.
Jets region manager Shane Sexton said it was great for the two boys to be recognised for their on field efforts.
“Will had a great National Championship and played with some real confidence throughout the year. Adam is just Adam, he works hard and will always get the best out of himself,” Sexton said.
Next up was the awarding of the Morrish Medal to the best player in the TAC Cup for the season.
The highest placed Jet was Jack Charleston who finished with 11 votes after a stellar year which saw him play in 18 games and kick nine goals.
He was named in the best players on 14 occasions.
“Jack had a great season. He was very consistent, we started him in the back pocket and he was really impressive early so we were able to move him around a bit,” Sexton said.
Dandenong Stingray Alex Benbow took out the medal after polling 22 votes.
The results round out a great season for the Jets, whose year came to an end when they were defeated by the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup semi-finals.
However, after a slow start to the year, just making the finals was a pleasant surprise.
They won eight of their last 10 matches in a blistering run home, which included their first finals win for 16 years.
“It was probably our best performance in about 15 years. If you look at the whole season we probably only had a couple of games where clubs were really able to get a hold of us,” Sexton said.
“From that point of view, it was great to remain so competitive.
“We set ourselves at the start of the year to play finals and then to try and win one. To do that was great.
We had our chances to beat Calder on the weekend but we just couldn’t take them.”
They will now wave goodbye to a number of familiar faces and bring in the next batch of kids, eager to build on the good work done this year.
