A portable combination heating and cooling device, designed by Williamstown’s Enzo Kocak, has claimed second place in this year’s international Electrolux Design Awards.
Enzo’s design ‘Ribbon’, was selected as a finalist from a field of 1300 applicants from around the world.
This design is an all-in-one warming and cooling device for portable use.
Its unique shape and flexibility allows for wrapping around a vessel containing food or drink, or to puzzle it together for use as a hotplate.
Enzo said he came up with the idea because people are spending less and less time at home and he wanted to create an appliance that people can take with them.
“It’s not meant to replace those big appliances but provide a lot of different uses,” he said.
Enzo studies Industrial Design at Monash University and is in his third year.
With only one year left to go the design student is unsure what field of design he would like to work in as yet.
“At the moment I’m more into the appliance design and things with a bit of technology,” he said.
“But right now I’m doing some furniture and automotive design.
“It’s a really broad subject.”
The 20-year-old said he’d always been interested in art and drawing and was leaning more towards that before starting his course.
“Then I saw this course and saw what people were doing and it clicked.
“You’re applying creativity to something that’s a bit more useful.”
For his efforts Enzo received 3000 Euros which he said he’ll use to create a prototype for his major project next year.
