FOR a group of conscientious young people, giving up their free time to give back to their community is just something they love to do.
Over the weekend young people from Hobsons Bay’s Youth Voice Committee (YVC) headed up by Youth Voice Delegate Cr Luba Grigorovitch organised a fun-run to raise money for local not-for-profit organisation Latitude Youth Housing.
The event saw scores turn out to give back, raise awareness and donate much needed funds to the organisation.
YVC member Alejandro Zambrano, who came up with the idea for the fun run, wanted to engage the community in a healthy way whilst at the same time raise money for a good cause.
Through his studies the 18-year-old had worked previously with Latitude and the group thought they would be the ideal organisation to sponsor.
“They’re such an important part of Altona,” he said.
For Elias Assaf, YVC was the perfect opportunity to get involved in Hobsons Bay.
“I wanted to get involved, especially in youth events,” he said.
The group organised the 4.2 kilometre event off their own back and in their own time.
Twenty-year-old Alex said the result was a huge team effort.
“We’re trying to get the YVC name out there and raise funds for a charity that affects our community,” she said.
For Cr Grigorovitch, seeing the day come to fruition was a particularly proud moment.
“I’ve been with them since joining the council,” she said.
“The events have gone from strength to strength.
“I’m extraordinarily proud.”
This Wednesday an inaugural fundraising dinner will be held at Grand Star Receptions for Latitude where a cheque from the YVC will be presented to the organisation.
