AFTER 36 years of teaching hundreds of students, Carol Mattia will be saying goodbye at the end of term.
Carol, who has spent the last 20 years teaching at Altona Green Primary School, said she would miss her time at the school but it was time for her to retire.
She added she had particularly enjoyed her time at Altona Green and hopes to keep ties with the school as a volunteer.
“I think the principal we have here is committed to staff welfare and has the kids at heart,” she said.
“She really bats for the underdog … some of our kids have tough stories and she’s always there.”
Carol said she was so impressed by the school sent her twins to the school as well.
“I really believe in the school – the kids are treated really well here.
“It’s going to be hard to say goodbye.”
Next year Carol plans to travel with her husband, work as a relief teacher and volunteer time at the school she has grown to love.
“I want to keep my finger in the education pie.”
The 55-year-old also lives locally in Altona Meadows and will be celebrating her retirement with a special family dinner with her husband and 26-year-old twins.
Carol said the kids are what make the job so special and so difficult to leave.
“I always get a buzz out of the funny things they say and do.”
She said she’s enjoyed teaching all grades but the younger kids are “magic”.
“They’re so enthusiastic.
“All kids want is a bit of love and humour.”
Last Thursday a special assembly was held for Carol and the students were encouraged to dress up in costumes inspired by her initials C and M.
