HOBSONS Bay City Council will place the draft Newport Activity Centre Parking Strategy on public exhibition until 21 March so the community can have its say.
Spotswood Ward’s Cr Bill Tehan said the parking strategy analyses the current parking situation in Newport and recommends measures for improvement.
“Newport has become a popular activity centre and it is important that people are able to access the cafes, shops and services that Newport offers,” Cr Tehan said.
“We know that demand for parking exceeds supply and this strategy identifies initiatives that will improve parking conditions for the short, medium and long term.”
Williamstown North Ward Cr Peter Hemphill said the council had conducted car parking surveys in the area during peak periods and had consulted with the Newport Traders’ Association.
“Feedback from those consultations identified an increasing number of commuters travelling by car to Newport due to changes in train timetables, short term parking restrictions close to the retail area and an agreement for a traders’ permit system to free-up prime parking spaces for customers,” Cr Hemphill said. “While the Department of Transport is constructing an additional commuter car park on the east side of Market St, it is important to explore other opportunities for managing car parking into the future.”
