JUST one day after her baby brother was born in May last year, Lara Nelson was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.
It was Lara’s two grandmothers that first raised the alarm, noticing that their granddaughter’s complexion was growing paler by the day, her energy levels were dropping and she was always prone to catching colds.
The Altona girl was quickly
taken to The Royal Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed.
Lara’s mother, Amber said she’s incredibly grateful for the amazing staff at RCH, who have supported the whole family throughout Lara’s journey.
Amber said that though Lara’s diagnosis came as a shock their faith has helped them through the tough times.
“She’s such an amazing little girl,” she said. “She’s the type of girl that if she falls over she gets up without crying.”
Amber said Lara being diagnosed so young was a blessing in disguise.
“It means that with some of the more traumatic treatments she is able to get over them pretty fast… We try to keep her in the loop because she’s such a knowing little girl – I think she’ll remember the good bits rather than the pain.”
Lara, now three, is this year’s ambassador for the Good Friday Appeal’s Charity Auction House.
The auction will see a brand new double-storey Point Cook home sold on Good Friday, with all proceeds going towards RCH Good Friday Appeal.
Amber said Lara is thrilled to be this year’s ambassador and said she’s already visited Alamanda and given it her tick of approval.
“It’s such an honour to be involved with such an important fundraising event for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, and I credit all of the hospital staff with helping us through such a tough time in our lives.”
The Charity Auction House initiative is a collaboration between Villawood Properties and home builder, Henley, to raise money for the much-loved hospital.
This year, Villawood Properties has donated a 476sqm home-site at its multi-award-winning Alamanda community at Point Cook, and Henley has donated and is currently building its brand new Sahara home design from its award winning Clendonvale collection, to go under the hammer at a no-reserve auction on Friday 6 April.
