Photographers step forward

BUDDING young photographers are being called on to be inspired by community harmony and wellbeing and take part in the 2012 Pixel8 Competition.
The competition is open to young people aged between 12 and 18 and was initiated by Hobsons Bay Victoria Police Inspector Bill Mathers.
Hobsons Bay Mayor Tony Briffa said the project brings together several local organisations, including the council, Victoria Police, Altona Lions Club, Newport Islamic Society and Star News Group, to work together to encourage creative expression and harmony for local young people.
“This is a great project and I encourage all young people who live, work or go to school in Hobsons Bay, regardless of their photographic skills to enter,” Cr Briffa said.
“There are some wonderful prizes up for grabs, including a Canon 1000DTKIS EOS 10.1MP SLR with twin lens kit and 8GB memory card, Crumpler camera bag, cash prizes, gift vouchers and professional mentoring workshops.
“Winners will also have their work featured on the Airtime flags at the Altona Meadows Skate Park later this year.”
Inspector Mathers said there was a wealth of talented young people in Hobsons Bay and the competition is about them using their talents through photography to promote the positive aspects of our community.
“I see this as an excellent opportunity for young people in Hobsons Bay to view their community through a camera lens and to gain an appreciation of the great place in which we live and work,” he said.
“It’s not about the most technically correct photo, it’s about capturing fantastic images and challenging young people to showcase how they see our community.
“We ask participants to use their imagination to capture a place or scene that typically represents Hobsons Bay or a photo of the diversity of people and cultures we have at our doorstep.”
Entries close on Friday 4 May.
