STUDENTS from Altona North Primary School will tackle the theme of technology when they compete in the Wakakirri National Story Festival next month.
Year 5 and 6 students worked together to create their dance performance ‘Talking about my generation’ which explores the negative influence of technology on children.
Assistant Principal Robyn Gregson said students came up with the idea after discussing the issues that affect their daily lives.
“The children decide on the theme. They get together and have workshops and build a story from those workshops,” Ms Gregson said.
“This year a number of them had come up with the idea that so many kids play on the computer all the time.”
Ms Gregson said the students were excited to perform in the national arts competition and were proud of what they had achieved.
“The students gain so much from the performance because they develop self-esteem and promotion of worth,” she said.
“It’s building that confidence within them and being able to connect with the outside world in a positive way. It’s just amazing when we see some of our kids coming through.”
The school will use recycled materials to create their backdrops and props to teach students about the environment and sustainability.
The Wakakirri performance will be held at Clock Tower Centre in Moonee Ponds on Thursday 19 July.
