New plan for growth

By ALESHA CAPONE
THOUSANDS of new homes could be built in Altona North, under a proposal released last week.
Last Monday, residents were invited to view a draft structure plan which will guide the future development of ‘Precinct 15’.
The area to be redeveloped measures approximately 64 hectares and is bordered by the West Gate Freeway, New St, Blackshaws Rd and Kyle Rd, excluding the Brooklyn Terminal Station.
The plans showed up to 3000 new homes could be constructed inside Precinct 15.
During December last year Hobsons Bay City Council voted the area should include 10 per cent affordable housing.
The council, Precinct 15’s landowners and the Department of Planning and Community Development are working together on the draft structure plan.
They will also develop a planning scheme amendment to rezone Precinct 15, which is presently classed as Industrial Zone 1.
In addition, portions of land at 65 to 69 Kyle Rd and along New St are classified as Industrial Zone 3.
Part of the precinct is subject to a heritage overlay, where the former Gilbertsons Meat Processing Complex is located on Blackshaws Rd and Kyle Rd.
The complex, built during 1950, is listed in the Victorian Heritage Database as “one of few remaining relatively intact meat processing plants in the metropolitan area complete with all elements that illustrate the process such as the stockyards, skin drying sheds and processing plant”.
Residents who want to find out more about the Precinct 15 draft structure plan can contact Hobsons Bay City Council’s Strategic Planning Department on 9932 1000.
