A WILLIAMSTOWN icon has been given a grant of $20,000 to help preserve the area’s maritime history.
The Ian Potter Foundation grant is set to fund a conservation management plan for the Seaworks site which includes the heritage sheds and morgue in Nelson Place and Ann St.
Seaworks also includes a permanent historical maritime exhibition, the Pirates Tavern, event spaces, casual berthing and a home for visiting tall ships.
The Seaworks Foundation executive officer Therese Pritchard said the grant would ensure the Seaworks site was restored in a manner sympathetic to the site’s significant history.
“We are delighted the Ian Potter Foundation shares our vision for the Seaworks site in providing us with this significant grant,” Ms Pritchard said.
“The conservation management plan will be the cornerstone of redevelopment of the site.
“There is significant maritime heritage at Seaworks, and we need to ensure that is not lost with renewal of the existing buildings on the site.”
Seaworks is based at 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown, and is open to the public for educational, tourism and recreational activities. See www.seaworks.com.au for more information.
