TRAFFIC congestion on Point Cook Rd is “extremely dangerous” and action must be taken to improve the situation according to Hobsons Bay City Council.
Last Tuesday councillor Luba Grigorovitch put forward a motion for the council to write to VicRoads about the issue.
She said a strategy was needed to “alleviate the congestion of such a heavy traffic intersection at Point Cook Rd and work to develop a safer crossing area”.
Cr Grigorovitch said the road’s Central Ave intersection was especially busy during peak hour.
“As a number you around this table would know it’s a heavily-populated area, the traffic there is overwhelming and it can be extremely dangerous,” she said.
Cr John Hogg said the council has been discussing Point Cook Rd’s problems for more than a decade.
Cr Hogg said VicRoads has a “to-do list” of traffic projects across the state and Point Cook Rd could require around $13 million in upgrades.
He said the road has been resurfaced and the Skeleton Creek bridge has been widened to improve safety but Point Cook Rd remained “pretty awful”.
Cr Hoog also said roadwork at the western end of Central Ave has “cobwebs on it” and he would like to see it finished.
“Anything we can do to encourage VicRoads to come to the party to make improvements in the future I’m more than happy to support,” he said.
Star contacted VicRoads but did not receive a response before deadline.
