CHRISTINE McKinnon survived breast cancer but the disease also claimed the life of her best friend.
Altona resident Ms McKinnon was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago and was lucky enough to beat the disease.
However tragically her best friend Monique succumbed to the illness.
“She lost her life three years ago after it got into her liver and lungs because I think she was too scared to go to the doctor,” Ms McKinnon said.
“It’s very important that people go to the doctor if they discover a lump or think anything is wrong.”
Ms McKinnon is a member of the Western Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group which meets in Altona Meadows on the first Tuesday of each month.
“It just helps to talk to people who have been through the same thing you have,” Ms McKinnon said.
“I have survived cancer but four years down the track I still go for the friendship.”
Ms McKinnon said she believed it could be helpful for women – who have been recently diagnosed with cancer – to meet others who have recovered from the disease.
“It’s good for them to see us happy and talking and laughing, it gives them a brighter outlook,” she said.
Ms McKinnon said women from as far away as Melton, Sunshine, Yarraville and Coburg attended the group which is also raising funds for the Pink Ribbon Appeal on behalf of the Cancer Council.
They recently held a stall as part of the Altona Beach Market and raised around $400 for the appeal.
Western Buddies meets at the ISIS centre in Queen St, Altona Meadows on the first Tuesday of each month at 12.30pm. For more information ring Ms McKinnon on 9398 5461.
