A GROUP of ladies from the Altona Bowling Club had a ball when they took part in a competition recently.
The talented women triumphed on the green, taking home two prizes at the Metro West Bowls Region competition last month.
Club members Colleen Maxwell, Darlene Badenoch and Sharon Callus won the triples section.
In addition, Willie van der Linden placed first in the singles novice section, which is for players with less than two years’ experience.
Mrs van der Linden said she took up bowls at the encouragement of her husband of 44 years – and fellow bowler – Frank.
Mrs van der Linden thanked all the Altona Bowling Club members who helped prepare for the Metro West event.
“People were saying I played one of my best games – those who were watching said so,” the grandmother of three said.
“I think I beat the opposition pretty well.
“I won a $100 cheque. I’ll probably spend it on something related to bowls.”
Mrs Maxwell and Mrs Callus said they were delighted to beat the Yarraville/Footscray side to win the triples contest.
“We beat them by one shot, so we will go to Bendigo in April for the play-offs to win for the state,” Mrs Maxwell said.
The Hoppers Crossing resident has been bowling for nine years.
“I actually really enjoy bowling myself. I love the Altona club too, it’s a lovely social club,” she said.
Just like Mrs van der Linden, Mrs Callus took up bowling at the encouragement of her husband Len who is also a Commonwealth Games bowler.
“I just enjoy it. It’s my hobby and it gets me out of home. I’m just competitive and I love it,” Mrs Callus said.
