STANDING ovations show appreciation for a great performance – but Williamstown High School wants you to take a seat instead.

The school has launched the WHS Centenary Theatre Fund as they look to celebrate their centenary from October 2014 and need ‘seat’ sponsors to help out.

The fund aims to raise $2 million to build a 300-seat theatre at the college’s senior campus for music, drama and dance programs, assemblies, visiting lecturers and community groups.

Without government assistance, the school is searching for donations to help build the theatre.

Supporters have the opportunity to purchase engraved brick pavers for $200 each, $350 for two or $500 for three.

Alternatively ‘seat sponsors’ will have their name or family surname engraved on a brass plate featured on the theatre chairs.

Parents Susan van Wyk and Tim Lee have purchased a $5000 seat inside the future theatre.

Their children Jack and Georgia are in Year 11 and 10 at the school.

Ms van Wyk said sponsoring a chair at the theatre gave the family a chance to show their appreciation for the school.

“To think you can contribute to building something like that is fantastic and when this appeal was launched, we thought it was quite unique and we would like to be a part of it,” she said.

“We did think it’s a really creative approach to it and it’s a way to encourage people to contribute perhaps more than they might do with loose change in an envelope or a chocolate drive, which I know not everyone can do but Tim and I discussed it and decided we would like to help out.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the Centenary Theatre Fund can go online at www.willihigh.vic.gov.au or ex-students who want to register your interest in the centenary celebrations can contact whsessa@gmail.com
