HOBSONS Bay City Council has lodged a submission to the Department of Justice expressing concern over increases in Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal fees.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Angela Altair said while the Council understands the reasons for the proposed changes to the VCAT fee structure, the hefty increases may restrict access to VCAT by those in need.
“In one instance the fee for hearings involving objectors will increase from its current $38 to $731, before increasing again to over $1000 by 2015,” Cr Altair said.
“Such an increase could make it unaffordable for some residents to lodge an application and limits people’s access to the justice system.
“While I can understand the type and quantity of matters being brought before VCAT has changed dramatically, there needs to be a balance to ensure the tribunal is still accessible to resolve conflicts.”
The Mayor said the council would also be paying higher fees when it lodges applications regarding enforcement matters.
