A GROUP of dedicated youths are out to prove they’ve got what it takes to make a positive contribution to their community.
Future Leaders Unite (FLU) is a passionate group of young people aged 12 to 25, who meet on a weekly basis to plan youth events.
Alex Zambrano, 19, has been involved with youth orientated group since he was 15-years-old.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to step up get to make a change in the local community,” Alex said.
“There’s a reason why I’m still around. I’ve seen people come and go but I’ve found it so rewarding.”
First time group participant Gabi Duke, 14 said since joining the group she has meet like-minded people and developed social skills.
“It shows that we can do things really well and we’re not just the normal stereotypical teenager that just sits on a laptop all day,” Gabi said.
“It brings up so many different opportunities for us in the future and it helps us to gain friends and social skills.”
While 17-year-old Rachel Morrow said she joined the group to develop life and work skills that can be used in her future.
Alex said the group encouraged new members to check it out.
“As a committee for the last few years we’ve been expanding and looking at ways to get young people involved so that is one of our primary goals to get people involved,” Alex said.
FLU formed in 2012, and work alongside Hobsons Bay Youth Services in projects that recognise and reward young people for the amazing things they contribute to the community.
