A SAVINGS program that helps families cover some of the back to school costs has one family grinning from ear to ear.
The program, Saver Plus, is helping to ease the burden by supporting Australian families through financial education and more than $500 in matched savings.
Altona father of two Raj said the program has eased the financial costs of books, equipment and other school necessities.
“The program has meant my children can go to school with new uniform, books and even money towards a school laptop this year,” Raj said.
“It’s great to know that I will have $500 that I wouldn’t normally have to go towards school costs. It’s really helped reduce the stress than can mount up after holidays.”
Delivered locally by The Smith Family, the 10-month program has already benefited more than 16,000 Australians, encouraging them to set financial goals and learn about long-term savings habits.
Raj encouraged other families to join the Saver Plus program.
“The financial rewards are more than just the matched funds; you can build saving confidence and long term habits as well.”
According to latest research by RMIT University the benefits of Saver Plus reach beyond the participants themselves, with 81 per cent of those taking part encouraging family members, including children to save.
“Throughout the journey I learnt it is easy to save money and you can and will finally reach your saving goals. Plus it’s the best feeling reaching such a rewarding goal,” Raj said.
Saver Plus worker from the Smith Family, Daniel Crotty said the program builds people’s money management skills and confidence with simple tools including budget and spending diaries.
“I’ve seen the program change people’s attitudes toward money and in many cases change their life.”
