All in effort

LAVERTON committee member Matthew Pratt isn’t looking at the win/loss ledger this season in the Western Region Football League.
Instead, he is searching for a more consistent performance from his senior side.
After winning just two games last year, Pratt said more four-quarter efforts will be the key for the club moving forward.
“It will always be about competitiveness,” he said.
“When you come off the year that we had last year, which was certainly nothing to write home about, the key piece for us is about competitiveness.
“I don’t think you can talk about win/loss ratio until such time as you really establish yourself as a side that gives a four-quarter effort.
“I have been involved in football a long time and watched a lot of football and the difference is the work-rate of some sides over four quarters against the sides that only play for one and a half or two quarters.”
The Magpies appointed Dallas Harvey into the role of senior coach during the off-season.
It is the second time Harvey will coach the club, after he took the Magpies to finals in 2009 before taking up an assistant role with Point Cook.
They have also welcomed playing assistant coach Chris Collins, who has impressed everyone in his short time at the club.
“His leadership, even from night one was very evident to us,” Pratt said about Collins.
“The way he communicated with players, his leadership on the ground, his enthusiasm and support for the playing group was evident straight away.
“He had a chat to us after that and said he may be interested in the playing assistant coach role and then we went away and had some discussions and then made him an offer in terms of coming on board.”
Collins will be joined at the Magpies by imposing centre-half back Robert Schultz who is making the move over from South Australia.
Laverton will open its 2013 Division Two season against competition new-comer Manor Lakes in round one.
In the lead up to the season, the Magpies are happy to hear from any potential new players or sponsors wishing to join the club.
