ROTARY members from across Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay will join forces this weekend to help spruce up the Newport Scout Hall.
Members from Rotary clubs in Footscray, West Footscray, Yarraville, Williamstown, Flemington and Point Gellibrand will be gardening mowing, weeding, washing the walls, replacing weatherboards, cleaning glass, organising supplies in the kitchen and creating storage as part of the day-long project this Sunday.
The mission is part of an Australia-wide project called Rotarians and Friends at Work, which runs for the month of April.
Footscray Rotary president Maria Silber said it was important to support other community groups in the area.
“It’s (the Newport Scout Hall) sort of in the local area for quite a few of the clubs, and it seems like a group that needs a bit of support – they don’t have very many scouts,” Ms Silber said.
“If the hall looks better, it might be more attractive for more young people to want to join.
“We also hope people will see Rotary out in the community and want to know more, and it might lead to increased membership, because all the clubs are looking at inviting people in to become members.”
The Rotarians plan to celebrate their efforts with a barbecue at the end of the day.
