Curbing noise in its tracks

THE State Government has released a policy to help manage noise from new passenger rail infrastructure.
The Passenger Rail Infrastructure Noise Policy provides a clear process for planners to consider and address the noise generated by new passenger rail projects.
The policy will be triggered when statutory approvals are required for a planned change to passenger rail infrastructure or land use changes near an existing or future rail line.
Under the new policy, if noise is expected to exceed investigation thresholds, transport and planning authorities are required to apply the set of principles to determine the appropriate mix of actions to manage noise.
“Construction of new passenger rail infrastructure is essential to meet the future transport needs of our growing population,” State Transport Minister Terry Mulder said.
“However, these developments need to be managed carefully and with consideration for the amenity of local residents.“
The Passenger Rail Infrastructure Noise Policy allows careful consideration of amenity issues when there is a major change to the rail infrastructure in close proximity to homes or where new homes are planned close to railways.”
