DRIVING 3,600 kilometres across some of Australia’s roughest terrain in a car worth $500 does not faze Tim Day.
Tim and his team from Manheim in Altona, who are event sponsors, will be among 200 teams with petrol in their tanks and a whole lot of gusto to take on some of the most challenging roads to raise funds for cancer research and prevention.
The uniquely decorated Shitboxes – cars worth $1,000 or less – will splutter over 3,600km from Adelaide to Fremantle via Laverton in seven days as part of the Cancer Council’s largest private fund-raiser.
Tim put his team together and bought a Subaru Liberty worth $500 for the journey.
“I’m very happy to be doing it and hope we can participate and raise a lot of money for the cause,” Tim said.
Tim admits to fears the car might break down, but is confident they will make it.
This route will see cars take on isolated roads through opal town Coober Pedy, to Uluru, along the dusty Great Central Road to Warakurna, Tjukayirla roadhouses, Laverton and the goldfields of Kalgoorlie before arriving in the historical seaport of Fremantle.
At the end of the trip Manheim will hold a charity auction and fund-raising lunch with many drivers saying goodbye to their loyal jalopies – for a good cause.
So far Tim’s team has raised $10,000 which has already exceeded their fund-raising goal.
“It shows people have been very generous in supporting it, it is a great cause.”
“We’ve exceeded our goal so we might change our goal post as they say.”
Since its inception in 2010, the rally has raised over $1.7 million for the Cancer Council.
In 2013, they aim to raise an additional $1.3 million.
