A PLAQUE in Altona Meadows was recently unveiled to commemorate victims of bullying.
The plaque, located on the corner of Queen St and Merton St signifies a place of reflection for those who have lost a loved one to bullying.
The plaque also recognises bullying victim Allem Halkic, an Altona Meadows 17-year-old teenager who took his own life in 2009.
Allem’s parents Dina and Ali were then involved in Australia’s first prosecution over cyber bullying.
The plaque is a symbol for Allem and in the campaign against bullying.
Hobsons Bay City Councillor Luba Grigorovitch said the plaque was a gentle reminder to the community that bullying of any type was simply not okay.
“What Allem’s family have gone through since the tragedy, almost four years ago, is not something anyone would want to face,” Cr Grigorovitch said.
“This plaque is a place where family and friends can go to and reflect.”
Cr Grigorovitch said she admired the strength and courage of Ali and Dina.
“What they have done to advocate against bullying is an inspiration.”
The plaque also stands to raise community awareness to the dangerous of bullying and the need to respect and care for each other.
The location at GROW was chosen to complement the sculpture that represents optimism and hope, with a flower being an emblem of friendship and respect.
