WERRIBEE crashed to its second huge loss in succession on Saturday, going down to Sandringham by 64 points.
Both teams enjoyed time in front on the scoreboard throughout the first half as the momentum shifted with each goal.
The Tigers took a six point lead into the main break but that was to be their final time within striking distance.
The Zebras booted eight goals in the third quarter and then piled on another seven in the final term to cruise to the 24.20 (164) to 15.10 (100) win.
Terry Milera put his name forward for a senior recall to the St Kilda side with an impressive bag of six goals on his way to a best on ground performance.
He was well supported by fellow Saints forward Spencer White who booted three goals including a contender for goal of the year.
White, who has previously been likened to Lance Franklin, did he best Buddy impersonation with a blistering run down the wing, which included multiple bounces, before slotting the goal.
For the Tigers, Ben Warren and Ben Brown booted three goals each while North Melbourne ruckman Daniel Currie was named the club’s best player.
After conceding 19 goals the week before against Williamstown and 24 on the weekend, Werribee coach Scott West said the high totals were a concern.
“We were very competitive early in the game up until half time and probably didn’t take a few of our opportunities,” he said.
“We have done a heap of work on the defensive side of our game and I think when you are leaking goals like that it is a concern.
“We move the ball well when we’ve got it and we create chances ourselves but on the flip side we have got to be better at defending the play and turning the ball over once it comes outside our forward 50.”
Saturday’s result sees Werribee slip to seventh spot on the Victorian Football League ladder with a 2-3 win/loss record after five games.
The task won’t get any easier for the Tigers this week as they travel to Geelong to take on the Cats at Simmons Stadium.
“It will be another tough game,” West said.
“On Saturday (against Sandringham) that was probably the youngest team I’ve coached since I’ve been at Werribee.
“We may get some experience back next week and we will rally the troops and have a better performance.”
