COMMUTERS who use the North Williamstown railway station will soon to have more parking options with the construction of 50 additional spaces.
Works have started on the $530,000 project to revitalise the North Williamstown commuter car park and rail station entrance.
The VicTrack project was funded by the sale of land in Power St to the Department of Health for a future aged-care facility next to the Williamstown rail line.
Part of the proceeds will go towards this North Williamstown project.
The project will include an additional 50 new formal car parking spaces in and around the station, which is an increase of 40 car parking bays.
Works will also include upgrading the existing unmarked station car parking area and forecourt; installing new lighting, footpaths, landscaping and providing disabled car parking, a taxi bay, short-term parking and a ‘park-and-ride’ bay.
During the works the car park will be closed, speed restrictions will be in place on Power St and Hobsons Bay Council approved traffic management put in place.
Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder said the upgrade will increase the number of cars that could safely park at or near the station.
“The works also include the installation of new lighting and footpaths to provide safe pedestrian access between the station and the car park,” Mr Mulder said.
He said the upgraded station car park and on-street parking would improve traffic movements and permitted parking options.
The works should be finished by July.
