IF you’re in Newport in July you might feel the ground moving and an unexplainable urge to move your feet to the beat.
But there’s no need to be alarmed, it’s just a sign that the Newport Folk Festival has come to town.
The Newport Folk Festival, now in its sixth year, will be held on the 5, 6 and 7 of July.
This year’s feature event will be a ‘big gig’ at the Substation on the Saturday, where audiences will be treated to a performance from The Ska Vendors.
The band’s lead vocalist and Newport resident Steven Montgomery said the performance will be joyous and a lot of fun.
The Ska Vendors are a high energy, brass driven Ska band that will get your feet moving to their raw, honest and danceable Jamaican moves.
So it’s no surprise Steven said the bands reggae, Jamaican rhythm and blues is all about having fun.
“Hopefully they’ll leave with a smile on their face, that’s the whole plan,” he said.
The 11-piece band will perform with Pat Powell, and supported by the American band, The ReCHORDS, who will perform off the back of their European tour.
“People should come because it’s going to be great,” Steven said.
He said the Substation was a great venue and commended the organiser of the event.
“The more live venues we have in the west the better.”
The Newport Ska Young Band will also have their first performance at the festival and will feature some 15 brass instruments to create a huge sound.
Apart from brass, there will be music ranging from classical, contemporary soulful jazz, and swing to hard core blues.
There will also be opportunities to learn how to dance, make sough dough bread, have your first guitar lesson or perform to a tune.
