THE generosity of the Hobsons Bay community has warmed the hearts of local Salvation Army volunteers and with predictions of tougher times ahead it’s come at the right time.
The not-for-profit organisation’s annual Red Shield Appeal wrapped up at the end of June and although the Hobsons Bay branch didn’t quite match its predicted target, the money will go a long way to helping people in the community.
Hobsons Bay Salvation Army Commanding Officer Matthew Kean said they were hoping to raise $27,000 but fell short by $2000.
“We know we are going to feel it, which is why we were hoping for a little bit extra this year, but it didn’t happen like we planned,” Mr Kean said.
“But the people of Hobsons Bay are very generous and we are hoping they will continue to be generous throughout the year.”
Mr Kean said the demand for the organisation’s welfare service was growing, with factors like unemployment in the automotive industry hitting families in the Western Suburbs.
This year’s Red Shield Appeal saw 40 volunteers mobilise in Hobsons Bay for the annual doorknock weekend held at the end of May.
“It’s a huge endeavour, it happens every year and every year it gets bigger and bigger.
“The people of Hobsons Bay have been incredibly generous for us; they’ve been incredibly welcoming when we’ve come to their door.”
Mr Kean said in Hobsons Bay they were already starting to notice the need to help families for basic necessities like food and clothing.
“Here in Hobsons Bay we will definitely be using our portion of that money for basic needs of families.”
Last year 63,000 people statewide used the emergency relief support the Salvation Army offered, compared with 51,000 in 2011.
Mr Kean said “the Salvation Army is driven by God’s love for people.”
