TWO Hobsons Bay City councillors got a taste of what it would be like to step into the shoes of the principal at Seabrook Primary School last week.
Councillors Colleen Gates and Luba Grigorovitch took charge of students at Seabrook Primary School last week as part of the annual Principal for a Day program.
The program helps schools develop relationships with successful business and community leaders.
Cr Gates said she was looking forward to meeting some of the younger members of the community.
“This will be a great opportunity to see what is important to the next generation of Hobsons Bay residents and how we can engage young people in the community,” Cr Gates said.
Cr Gates and Cr Grigorovitch shadowed the school principal Susan Lee and participated in normal daily activities.
The principal and councillors also discussed the challenges and current issues each is
facing in their leadership role.
Cr Grigorovitch said it was an opportunity to see first-hand the pressures teachers are under with the increasing classroom numbers.
“I now have a better understanding of how challenging the day-to-day demand is on teachers.
“Children need to be treated differently to adults and I admire the patience required by teachers to ensure our children have the best opportunities.”
“Today was a great opportunity to see what is important to the next generation of Hobsons Bay residents.”
Ms Lee said it was a worthwhile opportunity for the school and the councillors.
“It’s a good communication system the council have with the local youth,” she said.
“It gave the school an opportunity to talk to them and also for students to learn about local government and it’s opened new links between the school and local government.”
