THE Altona Roosters failed in their bid to go back to back in the Victorian Rugby League’s First Grade grand final, going down to Sunbury United 36-16 on Saturday.
It was all looking promising enough for the Roosters in the beginning, scoring the first try of the game.
However, the Tigers then went on to score the next 16 points to go into the shed in front at half time.
Twelve months ago, the Roosters were faced with that exact half-time deficit against the same opponent before going on to claim the title 25-22.
But this time around, there was to be no repeat of that, as the Tigers kicked clear in the second half to claim victory in front of their local fans at Sunbury’s Langama Park.
Altona captain Ben James said his side was simply outclassed by a better one on Saturday.
“The effort was there, absolutely everyone tried their hardest and sometimes it just doesn’t go your way on the day,” James said.
“There was no finger-pointing. We were just not good enough on the day.”
