THE WILLIAMSTOWN RSL Pipe Band is currently looking for new recruits who can drum and bag a beat.
The Grade 3 Pipe Band was established in 1909 and is one of Australia’s oldest continuously functioning pipe bands.
The band participates in the Victorian Pipe Band competitions which start in early December in Daylesford.
They also compete at Bendigo, Geelong, Ringwood and Ballarat on various dates until April and are asked to play at many events including the High Point Shopping Centre Christmas Parade and Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club.
Group secretary and band member Fiona Thomson said they were very keen to recruit drummers and pipers, new and established players to the band.
“We want them to share the pleasure we gain from being part of our long established band. Not only an enjoyment of Scottish tunes but the comradeship we have as a group,” she said.
Ms Thomson said for new members an ability to read music would be of benefit if they wanted to play bagpipes or drums, but it wasn’t essential.
“We have a diverse group of individuals within our band and that is what makes the band very special, we want to continue to grow the group and ensure that pipe band music continues for many years.”
An enjoyment of Scottish tunes is important.
“We welcome anyone who has an interest in being part of our group, to learn an instrument or to be part of our group and assist with fund-raising and social events.”
The group practices once a week at the Newport Lakes Primary School, Elizabeth St, Newport every Wednesday from 7pm to 10pm, and twice a week during competition times.
They offer tuition at $5 for 30 minutes from experienced pipers and drummers.
