Vision is future for foreshore

By NICOLE VALICEK

HOBSONS Bay City Council has developed a vision that will enhance the use of the Altona and Seaholme Foreshore.
The council adopted the Altona and Seaholme Foreshore Community Vision during last week’s council meeting to guide the future use, development and management of the Altona and Seaholme Foreshore.
Cherry Lake Ward councillors Tony Briffa and Sandra Wilson said the vision was placed on public exhibition and 23 submissions were received.
“The foreshore areas of Altona and Seaholme are unique and highly valued by the community,” Cr Briffa said.
“This vision will help protect the values of the foreshore that the council and the community hold dear, while maximising its potential and enhancing its natural appeal.”
Cr Wilson said the vision included a broad range of projects that were already in the early planning phase that acknowledge the future impacts of climate change and the environmental significance of the area.
“We are currently working to improve access points to the Altona and Seaholme Foreshore, as well as the sea wall and rock revetments,” Cr Wilson said.
“We will continue to upgrade Apex Park, shared pathways and the beach renourishment project.”
Other projects highlighted by Cr Wilson include enhancing car and trailer facilities at the Altona Boat Ramp, an audit of public lighting along the foreshore, and develop master plans for GK Ransom Reserve and Cresser Reserve.
Cr Wilson said the vision was built on extensive community surveys and the feedback the council received on the draft has been taken into account to form the final plan.
The council will now refer the Altona and Seaholme Foreshore Master Plan, which will provide more detailed planning, to the mid-year budget review for possible funding.
