A COMMUNITY group wants to inspire and connect people in Hobsons Bay by introducing them to a rapidly growing movement that’s turning waste material into re-useable products.
Transition Hobsons Bay (THB), a community group run by local volunteers, is taking a look at how Hobson Bay locals are finding ways to use waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Active THB member Wendy Clarke said the Upcycling, Recycling and Waste Not workshop aims to inspire and connect the community about all things sustainable, including reducing consumption through upcycling and recycling.
The workshop, run by THB and Fran from the EnviroCentre at the Altona Library is being held in the lead up to the Garage Trail Sale.
Ms Clarke said the national event is all about keeping stuff out of landfill and building community aims which align with what THB and the EnviroCentre are all about.
Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.
A highlight of the event will be presentations by three Hobsons Bay locals.
“The three presenters are all Hobsons Bay locals so we will be showcasing what Hobsons Bay locals are doing,” Ms Clarke said.
“We have a wealth of skills in our local community and this event helps to highlight and share them.”
She said there will also be a display of upcycled items to inspire everyone and get the creative juices flowing, some of which will be for sale on the night.
THB’s updated Recycling Guide which makes it easy to recycle plastics, oil, polystyrene, batteries, medicines, concrete and more will also be launched on the night with free copies available.
There will also be a door prize on offer- a hamper full of eco and bushfood goodies.
The event will be held on Thursday 24 October at the Altona Library, 123 Queens St, Altona.
Arrive at 6.30pm for a 6.40pm start. Entry is a plate to share or a gold coin donation. RSVP via Eventbrite: http://transitionhb-es2.eventbrite.com.au/?rank=1
