FOOTSCRAY United had a dismal day at Fearon Reserve on Saturday, capitulating with the bat against Williamstown CYMS in the VTCA’s North Division competition.
The CYs batted first but only lasted 50 overs in the middle before Footscray United dismissed them for 179.
Darren McLellan was the star for the visitors with the ball, claiming six wickets and four maidens from his 16 overs.
With 29 overs to bat through for the remainder of the day Footscray United looked as though it was in for a comfortable finish to the day’s play.
However, with all but opener Stuart Ainge (14) falling cheaply for single figures, the visitors collapsed to finish the day’s play stranded on 8/62.
United seemed to have no answer for the CYs’ Andrew Walshe, who did most of the damage with five wickets and four maidens from his 10 overs.
This weekend United will resume its seemingly doomed plight with John Portelli and Aaron Durasovic in the middle.
SEDDON needs to produce 188 runs this Saturday to defeat the Altona Roosters in the VTCA’s North A1 competition at Hanmer Reserve.
The visiting Roosters elected to bat and managed to produce a decent knock for the day, finishing up all out for 199 in the 75th over.
Seddon used a total of eight bowlers to knock over Altona, who on numerous occasions on Saturday looked to be on top with the bat.
Opening batsman and Altona captain Leigh Lewis got the ball rolling early in the day before Cooray Lalithe bowled him for 52, while Hamon Uppal also proved to be dangerous in the middle with 47 runs of his
own.
In the end Tim Grant was the pick of the bowlers for Seddon with 5/50 off 15.2 overs, while Lalithe, Tom Kriebardis and Hayden Dryiski each chipped in with wickets of their own.
KEILOR has already given up first innings points after just one day of play against Hoppers Crossing in the Senior Division of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.
After choosing to bat first on the road at Hogans Road Reserve the Blues struggled to keep hold of their wickets, losing all 10 in just 39.4 overs.
With Hoppers Crossing’s Travis Waring doing all the damage with the ball, Keilor could only yield 115 for the day.
With 40 overs still to come in the day’s play Hoppers Crossing then set out to claim first innings points and did so right at the death, reaching 2/117 by stumps.
Skipper Darrel Brown caused most of the damage, scoring 73 before Fernando finally removed him.
CHRIS Maple will be the head coach of the Western Bulldogs standalone VFL team, the Footscray Bulldogs.
Maple, who has been a member of the Bulldogs’ coaching panel since 2008, has headed the club’s development program for the last four years in the role of development manager.
He was also recently awarded the 2013 Sports Learning Australia Development Coach of the Year award by AFL Coaches Association.
Bulldogs acting chief executive Shannon Rees said that Maple’s appointment was a great outcome for the club. Maple will also continue to work in the role of Dogs’ development manager.
“Chris has played a significant role to date in developing the exceptional young talent that we have here at the Bulldogs,” Rees said.
“His capacity to support and develop our younger group to be the best that they can be – both on and off the field – makes him the perfect person to lead our VFL team going forward.”
Maple said that he was thrilled by the appointment.
“I am really looking forward to getting stuck in to building the Footscray Bulldogs into a professional, top notch team that nurtures and develops our future AFL players,” he said.
