A COMMUNITY garden that was developed as part of a program to promote healthy eating and exercise for over-55s will be opened to the public.
The passionate gardeners at the Floyd Lodge community garden are busy preparing for their annual Spring Open Day on Saturday 9 November.
Floyd Lodge gardening committee chairman Dennis Kerr said the event had become a regular feature on the spring calendar.
“The gardeners and supporters want to invite the community in to see how the garden has grown over the past year,” Mr Kerr said.
There will be a barbecue lunch and tomato, cucumbers and other plants grown on site for sale.
There will also be a special performance by Williamstown Willin Wimmin singing group.
“We welcome everyone to come and see what we are doing here.”
The community garden, known as ‘Floyd’s Patch’ is a thriving community garden made up of members from different backgrounds and countries.
The garden is located at the base of the Floyd Lodge public housing tower, and was opened in early 2009.
“The garden and the gardeners have flourished and the garden produces fantastic fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as trees and shrubs,” Mr Kerr said.
Each year sees new developments with a worm farm added this year.
Floyd’s Patch was developed as part of the ‘Well for Life’ program, which seeks to promote healthy eating and exercise for people over the age of 55.
The Friends of Floyd Lodge Group is committed to encouraging community building and social inclusion.
The open day will be held on Saturday 9 November at 63 Hanmer St, Williamstown, from noon to 2pm.
