THINGS got a little bit wild at Hobsons Bay libraries last week when wild life animals, reptiles and insects dropped in for a visit.
Andrew Wegener from Australian Wildlife Lectures showcased the animals at Altona North Community Library and The Environment Resource Centre at Altona Library for families to enjoy.
The event, which was organised by Hobsons Bay Council and sponsored by Mobil Altona Refinery, was part of the 2014 Summer by the Sea program, aimed to encourage the community to appreciate the coastal environment and wildlife.
“These types of free events are important to educate our community on the importance of looking after our native animals and to understand the pressures they may face by living in an increasingly urban environment,” Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said.
The popular event gave residents a chance to get up close with native Australian wildlife with live and preserved reptiles, spiders, mini beasts, birds and mammals on display.
“Some people enjoy getting up close and holding the animals, particularly the reptiles, while others prefer to observe them from the comfort of their glass safety tanks,” Cr Wilson said.
“Andrew Wegener from Australian Wildlife Lectures shares his knowledge, enthusiasm and respect for the many varied and unique animals and ecosystems that we have in Australia,’ Cr Wilson said.
“He uses a variety of teaching strategies where the participants are encouraged to observe, discuss and handle the animals so that they explore concepts about the needs and characteristics of different living things,” she said.
“It was an opportunity to bring the family to library to get up close and personal with animals such as frogs, lizards and snakes over the school holiday period.”
