UP-AND-COMING cricketing stars in Point Cook got to meet cricket legends Merv Hughes and Nathan Bracken at a cricket camp last week.
The McDonald’s Summer Cricket Camps, run by Shaun Brown’s Cricket Coaching, gave hopeful future cricket stars the chance to learn from the greatest in the game at Saltwater Reserve.
Hughes said he loved that the camps travelled to all different suburbs and rural areas giving everyone an opportunity to get involved.
“All the kids who come here know their cricket and they just want to learn,” he said.
“They are sponges for information and that’s what we try and do is help them along the way.”
Hughes said the kids were enthusiastic and could be out playing cricket all day and night if they were allowed.
“They each play cricket and each follow cricket, it’s just great – the enthusiasm of these guys is fantastic,” he said.
The budding junior talent were taught a variety of skills including bowling, batting and fielding and were given plenty of advice along the way.
Hughes said his advice to future stars of the game was simple.
“What we talk about is how important training is and how important control is and how important concentrate is in a game of cricket,” he said.
“If you can concentrate for long periods of time you’ll play better.”
Point Cook McDonald’s licensee Chris Carroll said the McDonald’s camps were committed to promote healthy and active lifestyles.
“We know these greats of the game will inspire the junior sporting stars of the community to reach for their best in the sporting arena while living active and healthier lifestyles.”
