A ONCE-popular organisation is making a comeback in Altona and hopes to attract young girls from across Hobsons Bay.
Girl Guides is returning to the area and leader Karen Milton said it is the perfect extra-curricular activity for young girls looking to improve their social skills and boost their confidence.
Karen said it is also a great way for parents to interact with other families in their area.
And she should know.
Twenty-eight years ago, Karen took her daughter to her first Girl Guides meeting and now she is spearheading the launch of the latest franchise.
“The girls learn social skills and we teach them about everyday events,” she told Star.
“It’s not about knitting and sewing … it’s about teaching self-confidence. There is an anti-bullying program … it has changed a lot.
“We really encourage outdoor activities and it’s a great way to bond and make friendships.”
She said the Guides program, open to girls aged five to 13 years, taught youngsters leadership skills and nurtured good community spirit.
“It really is a lovely atmosphere, I’ve met most of my friends from the
Guides.”
Anyone interested in joining the group can attend the first meeting on Wednesday, 30 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Altona Guides Hall. An adult must attend the first meeting.
