Grant targets the lonely

THE local veteran community has been delivered some welcome news with the announcement of federal funding of $9750 towards a project aimed at reducing social isolation.
Federal Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie said the funding had been made available under the Federal Government’s Veteran and Community Grants program to the AFC and RAAF Association (Port Macquarie Sub-branch).
“This grant will help to undertake a series of bus trips to help reduce social isolation. For some time the association has been undertaking bus trips including visits to the vineyards locally and to the Hunter Valley, scenic trips up and down the coast to places like Port Stephens, the Myall Lakes and South West Rocks,” Dr Gillespie said.
“While it’s only a relatively small grant, it will deliver an enormous benefit to many people within our ex-service community in keeping them active and involved in social activities.”
The Veteran and Community Grants program, administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), supports a range of community activities that promote healthy lifestyles for veterans, help veterans live independently at home and support carers.
