THE Spirit of Place exhibition being held at the Glasshouse Regional Art Gallery is the culmination of a four-year program for contributing art students.
In 2011 students from the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts program at Wauchope TAFE had the unique opportunity to participate in a project partnership between the Glasshouse and the Museum of Contemporary Art to learn about the exhibition process. This included a trip to the MCA in Sydney, to select works from their Indigenous art collection, for the People of the First Sunrise exhibit at the Glasshouse.
Students worked closely with the MCA Aboriginal curator Keith Munro to learn and participate in the curatorial decisions involved in the hanging of an exhibition and this month they will be using those skills to display their own works of art to the Port Macquarie community.
The vibrant selections in Spirit of Place respond to and explore aspects of the artist’s local environment and connection to the land – a theme that resonates strongly with the students, both culturally and personally.
The exhibition will run until 20 July.
