Artist’s bold stroke

THERE’s a new art group in Port Macquarie.
Keen sketcher Dorothy Filshie has started a sketching group, which she has called Saturday Sketchers.
The group will meet the third Saturday of each month, with the first meeting being this Saturday 17 May, at 2pm, at the Kooloonbung reserve in central Port Macquarie. Thereafter, it will move between different locations such as Town Green, Roto House, the marina, cemetery and local beaches.
Ms Filshie said there is no membership or attendance fee and the group is open to anyone and everyone who would like to have a go at sketching.
“All you need is a paper and pencil or biro, or even an iPad or easel and oils – it is totally up to you what medium you want to use,” she said.
A retired home science teacher, Ms Filshie studied textiles at art school and had a keen interest in art, but never explored it further until she retired and then took up sketching.
She said she was really enjoying sketching and it was a very social and interactive experience.
“People always come up to you to see what you’re doing and have a chat and also it helps you really relate with the location you are and explore it,” she said.
Ms Filshie said the more experienced sketchers in the group are happy to help new artists.
“Everyone has the ability to sketch – it’s just actually doing something about it,” she said.
“This group will enable like-minded people to get together and have fun while doing it.”
