Sheds are a haven

Ian Jessop, Bruce Wood, Les Knight, and Bob Marshall kick back with some of the furniture they made the Port Macquarie Men’s Shed.

IN SOME households there is a real misconception that the Port Macquarie and Wauchope Men’s Shed’s are like daycare for husbands. This could not be further from the truth.
Its members are a diverse group, covering the full spectrum of the workforce. The one thing they all have in common is the joy of building things, meeting new friends and not admitting to their age.
Port Macquarie and Wauchope sheds are not-for-profit organisations which stay open with the support of sponsors, community grants and proceeds from sales and minor restoration works.
Currently they have 60 members, all with varying skill sets, who attend from one to three days a week. All members are encouraged to take on personal projects as well as participating in group projects to raise money for the running of the shed.
The sheds are continually looking for projects and these will help to keep the doors open.
Both the sheds will take orders and jobs can be ready for collection as required.
For the young and the young at heart, they have a range of bikes varying from pre-loved to nearly new. Prices are negotiable and all monies raised go back into the shed.
The Port Macquarie shed is at 5/25 Central Road and is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 3pm, while the Wauchope shed is at the showground and is open Tuesday and Thursday from 8m to 2.30pm.
