Maggs bags top award

CAROLYN Maggs has been guiding young girls for longer than she cares to remember.
A District Leader for Brimbank’s Girl Guides, Ms Maggs has been helping youngsters earn their badges for half a century.
But last week it was her turn to shine when she was named Brimbank’s Citizen of the Year in honour of her remarkable 50 years service to Guides Victoria.
Ms Maggs told Star she was shocked to be nominated for the award.
In half a century of volunteering, the district leader has been an inspiration to hundreds of children who have come through the guides ranks.
“I’ve had kids who are now grown up and have kids of their own and those kids are grown up,” Ms Maggs said.
“That’s when I realise, I’ve been doing this for a long time.”
The awards were held in Sunshine’s HV McKay Gardens on Wednesday.
A total of 197 Brimbank residents took the oath to become Australian citizens during the Australia Day celebrations. Other recipients included the Norwood Association Client Reference Group, which won the Community Wellbeing Award, and the Kirrip Aboriginal Corporation, which received the Cultural Achievement gong.
