MORE than 1000 racegoers turned up for Werribee Racing Club’s race meeting on Saturday – a healthy number considering it had to compete with the Wyndham Weerama Festival, the Pako Festa Festival in Geelong, Ballarat Harvest Festival and the Blue Diamond Stakes in Caulfield on Saturday.
Seasoned punters would have noticed the surname Mallyon a number of times in the form guide. Seymour-based siblings Andrew and Katelyn Mallyon, grandchildren of three-time Caulfield Cup jockey Mick Mallyon, both had a win each on Saturday.
Mark Flaherty rode two winners, including one on Terpischore in the three-year-old fillies maiden plate. It was an eye-catching win from the favourite, who was caught four-wide all race but still came through for the win.
Flaherty also rode the longest odds winner, in the following race, on Greg Eurell trained Cooper James ($14) in the 1400m maiden plate.
Werribee’s next race is the highly anticipated Werribee Cup on 18 March. The Cup will make its long-awaited return to Werribee for the first time since 2007.
