THE youth of Brimbank rallied together last week to ‘March for Mental Health’.
On Friday youngsters and supporters in the community came together to March for Mental Health as part of The Fifth Army Day of Action movement led by headspace Sunshine.
The movement aimed to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health and promote support for young people facing mental health issues, or who needed to help a friend or family member.
Manager of the headspace Sunshine Centre Kim Wood said the centre was excited to part of the national event.
“It’s important that we spread the message that it’s okay for young people to talk about how they’re feeling when they are going through a tough time,” Ms Wood said.
“Often young people find it difficult to seek help when they are going through a difficult time,” she said.
“Its important for days like this to raise awareness and show young people there’s a lot of support available.”
Ms Wood hoped events like the march, and the many other various events organised throughout the year, would help combat the stigma attached to mental health.
“We know there is a large number of young people who are going through a tough time but only a small percentage of them are seeking help,” Ms Wood said.
The crowd marched peacefully down Hampshire Road Sunshine and its surrounds chatting to the community, handing out giveaways and sharing information.
