Art takes to the shops

WESTERN suburbs artists are preparing to transform a bakery, a supermarket and other businesses at Altona’s Harrington Square into mini art galleries.
Twenty-five artists will put their works on display in businesses at the shopping centre during the Bayside Festival next month.
Western Region Arts Network’s Hisham Attia said the exhibition, called Peep Show, was part of Hobsons Bay City Council’s Art In Public Places program.
He said the works would give shoppers a peep into the “innovative and contemporary” art produced by some of the West’s best artists.
“We’re very fortunate to have such a diversity of artists producing outstanding works in a variety of mediums,” Mr Attia said.
“Anyone who happens to find themselves in Harrington Square during the Peep Show will no doubt be very impressed with what they see.”
He said the works ranged from painting, glass art and fibre art to sculpture and installations.
Mr Attia said the exhibition was one of many examples of the Art in Public Places program bringing artworks to the people of Hobsons Bay.
“Basically the program brings artists and businesses together for the purpose of promoting local artists and adding a bit of colour to Hobsons Bay residents’ lives,” he said.
The program also includes an art market and a “community participation art project”.
The artworks will be on display from 7 March to 20 April.
