Hospital sheds asbestos

ASBESTOS roofing will be replaced as part of a redevelopment at Williamstown Hospital’s emergency department.
Over six weeks, the main Railway Cres entrance to the hospital will be closed, with public access available from the Stewart St entrance.
In a letter sent to residents and viewed by Star, Western Health explained accredited professionals would remove the asbestos in accordance with Environmental Protection Authority and WorkSafe regulations to ensure the safety of local residents, patients, visitors and hospital staff.
Work is expected to begin shortly.
The emergency department will be relocated to the ground floor of the Railway Cres building with public access from Railway Crescent and the ambulance entrance will be from Forster St.
The relocation is expected to be completed by June next year.
The letter told residents the redevelopment would involve some inconvenience to them but the hospital would do its best to minimise any disruption caused by the works or an increased in congestion in surrounding streets.
