IT IS NOT unusual for an eight-year-old to be taken to the doctor for a check-up, but it is not every day that they weigh more than 100 kilograms. That was the situation at Werribee Zoo last week though, as the king of the jungle was given a physical examination. Johari the lion was transferred to Werribee Open Range Zoo from Taronga Zoo late last month. Last Tuesday he was given a thorough physical examination and quarantine samples were taken to test for diseases that large carnivores can potentially carry. He was given a general anaesthetic and vets checked his chest, abdomen, limbs, paws and claw, tail, testicles, teeth, eyes and ears. The vet team concluded he was in excellent health and it is hoped he will complete his quarantine period after the planned 30 days. It’s hoped the young lion will play a role in the zoo’s breeding program.
