Crackdown on dumpers

SUNSHINE, Albion and St Albans are about to be targeted in a Brimbank City Council blitz on illegal rubbish dumpers.
Last week a council statement said the three suburbs have been identified as “rubbish-dumping hot-spots”.
The council announcement said illegal rubbish dumping – known as “fly-tipping” – is expensive to clean up.
“Council will be aiming to make the offenders – rather than ratepayers – contribute financially to this cost through substantial fines,” the council document said.
Rapid response inspections and local laws officers will be increasing their patrols in Sunshine, Albion and St Albans.
The council has also posted more than 1100 letters to residents, owners and body corporate managers “within well-known dumped rubbish areas in the municipality”.
“Council is committed to providing a clean, safe and attractive city for all residents and visitors to enjoy and to achieve this goal council will continue to investigate all reports of rubbish dumping and littering,” the council statement said.
“If a person is detected committing these offences they may be prosecuted through the Magistrates’ Court and face conviction and heavy fines of more than $10,000.”
The council has encouraged residents to report rubbish dumpers on 9249 4000, along with any details to aid in the investigation of offenders, especially registration details of vehicles.
The ‘My Brimbank’ phone app can also be used to report offenders and locations.
